ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Smithsonian Institution exhibit, "Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code," opens on June 23 at the Rochester Art Center, 40 Civic Center Drive SE in Rochester. The exhibit will be open through Sept. 21. Members of the media are invited to preview the exhibit on Friday, June 22, at 6 p.m. CDT at the Rochester Art Center.

This interactive program available at the exhibition invites you to consider different opinions about some of the issues surrounding genomic technologies and how they relate to your life.

In partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the exhibit has been traveling throughout the country and featured in various science centers since 2014. Mayo Clinic is the first academic medical center to sponsor the contemporary exhibit. Timothy Curry, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic physician and researcher, led the effort to bring the exhibit to Rochester. Dr. Curry is the education program director at the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine.

“Our intent is to offer an engaging, interactive and educational experience for the local and regional community, our patients and students,” says Dr. Curry. “As the presenting sponsor for this exhibit, we have the opportunity and honor to highlight how what we have learned from genomics research is being used to improve our health and help us understand more about ourselves and the world we live in.”

"Genome: Unlocking Life's Code" examines the complexities of the genome — the complete set of genetic or hereditary material of a living organism — and chronicles breakthroughs since the completion of the Human Genome Project more than a decade ago. The interactive exhibit includes 3D models, custom animations and videos of real-life stories. The exhibit examines the benefits and challenges that genomics presents to modern society, as well as the revolutionary nature of genomics.

“Seeking ways to strengthen and enrich our local communities is a lasting value at Mayo Clinic. We hope that bringing this renowned exhibit to Rochester will help residents feel more inspired, informed and empowered in their pursuit of personal health and wellness,” says Dr. Curry.
